Most riders choose between security and convenience — a U-lock is tough but awkward; a cable lock is easy but cuts in seconds. The OnGuard K9 gives you both. Hardened steel link plates fold compact for transport, unfold to 79cm of near U-lock protection, and lock with a cylinder that resists picking, drilling, pulling and bumping.
The lock that doesn't make you choose
Cable locks are convenient but a decent pair of bolt cutters ends them in under five seconds. U-locks are tough but bulky, and they only reach so far. The K9 sits in a category of its own — hardened steel link plates give you the resistance of a U-lock, while the folding design and 79cm reach give you the flexibility of a cable.
Hardened steel plates, not cable
Each link in the K9 is a hardened steel plate — not twisted wire, not braided cable. That means bolt cutters, angle grinders and hacksaw blades face a genuinely difficult job rather than an easy one. At 1kg it has real weight to it, which is exactly what you want in a lock.
A cylinder that takes the fight out of thieves
OnGuard's Z-Cylinder is the lock's other line of defence. It's designed to resist the four most common attack methods: picking, pulling, drilling and bumping. Most bike thieves move on when a lock takes longer than 30 seconds — a cylinder that defeats their standard techniques is what makes that happen.
79cm of reach — frames and wheels, sorted
Once unfolded, 79cm is enough to loop through your frame and both wheels and around a bike rack or solid post. That's the kind of reach a standard U-lock rarely offers. Out here where bike parking options can be limited, versatility in a lock matters.
Mounts to the bike, travels with you
The included mounting bracket fits most standard bicycle tubes — top tube, down tube, seat tube — so the K9 travels on the bike rather than in a bag. Grab it, lock up, go. Four extra grip keys are included so you've always got a spare.
Key Benefits
- Hardened steel link plates — far stronger than cable; resists bolt cutters and cutting tools
- Z-Cylinder protection — bump-proof, pick-proof, pull-proof and drill-resistant; defeats the most common attack methods
- 79cm unfolded length — enough reach to secure frame and wheels to a rack or post in one lock
- Folds compact for transport — near U-lock security without the bulk of a U-lock
- Mounting bracket included — fits most bike tubes; lock stays on the bike, not rattling around in a bag
- 4 extra grip keys included — always have a spare
- 1kg — solid and reassuring without being a burden to carry
FAQ:
How secure is the K9 compared to a standard cable lock?
Significantly more secure. A cable lock can be cut with basic bolt cutters in seconds. The K9 uses hardened steel link plates — the same material approach as a U-lock — which resist cutting tools far more effectively. The Z-Cylinder also defeats the picking, bumping and drilling attacks that defeat standard locks. It's not indestructible, but it's a serious step up from any cable lock at a similar price.
How does it compare to a U-lock?
The K9 offers near U-lock levels of plate security with one key advantage: reach. At 79cm unfolded, it can loop through a frame, both wheels and around a rack in a way most U-locks can't manage. The trade-off is that a dedicated U-lock shackle is arguably slightly more resistant to leverage attacks — but for most real-world situations, the K9 covers what a U-lock can't.
Will it fit around both my wheels and frame?
Yes — 79cm is enough to secure your frame and both wheels to a bike rack or fixed post in a single pass. Useful wherever bike parking options are limited or awkward.
How does it attach to the bike for transport?
The included mounting bracket bolts to most standard bicycle tubes — top tube, down tube or seat tube. The folded K9 clips into the bracket securely, so it travels on the bike without rattling around in a bag or backpack.
How many keys does it come with?
Four grip keys are included. Keep one on your keyring, stash one at home, one at work — you're covered if you ever lose one.
Is it suitable for leaving a bike locked outside in Broome's heat?
The hardened steel construction handles heat and sun without issue. Like any lock, we'd recommend pairing it with a shaded or covered lock-up spot where possible — more to protect your bike's components than the lock itself.
